4 Injured In GSP Chase, Multiple Crashes In DeKalb

Troopers say they were chasing a stolen vehicle when it crossed lanes and caused multiple crashes, which included GSP hitting a car.

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA — Four people were injured during a police chase and subsequent crashes involving Georgia state troopers and a stolen Kia in Stone Mountain, authorities said Thursday.

Troopers were searching for the Kia K4 around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday when they saw it pull out of a gas station near Redan and South Indian Creek roads, Georgia State Patrol said.

The Kia headed east on Redan, and GSP said troopers turned on their emergency equipment in an effort to stop the car. The Kia's driver refused to stop, and a police chase followed east on Redan near Mill Lake Drive, authorities said.

The car went into the westbound lanes, hitting a westbound Nissan and causing the Nissan to spin, authorities said.

The Nissan then entered the eastbound lane in front of one of the troopers, and the state police vehicle hit the back of the Nissan, authorities said.

The Kia then crashed into three other vehicles before finally stopping, authorities said.

A trooper checked on a trapped Nissan passenger, who was pulled to safety, authorities said.

Meanwhile, another trooper checked on the other drivers, including the suspect, who was trapped in the Kia, authorities said.

GSP said troopers saw the suspect and stayed with them until a fire department was able to remove him from the vehicle. A stolen gun was found on the suspect, authorities said.

The suspect and the Nissan passenger suffered serious injuries, while two other people suffered minor cuts and bruises, authorities said. They were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

The suspect was not identified, and GSP did not reveal any potential charges.

The GSP's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team investigated at the scene.
