Gas Tax Rises For Illinois Drivers With Start Of New Year
A new year means a higher gas tax for drivers in Illinois, according to state authorities.

ILLINOIS — The new year means a new, higher tax on gas for drivers in Illinois.
The state’s gas tax increased Jan. 1 from 39 cents per gallon to just over 42 cents per gallon, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue. The new rate will remain in effect through June 30.
The change comes after Illinois suspended the inflation adjustment to its gas tax six months ago, opting instead to keep the rate flat amid crushing inflation. The new rate reflects a spike equal to the percentage increase of the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers for the 12 months ending in September, according to the revenue department.
