'Bitterly Cold' Weather Prompts Aurora To Open Temporary Warming Center

The overnight warming center will open for locals in need of warmth or shelter this weekend, when "bitterly cold conditions" are expected.

AURORA, IL — As "bitterly cold conditions" are forecast, Aurora is activating its temporary overnight warming center this weekend.

The center, located at the Financial Empowerment Center, 712 S. River St., will be open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday into Saturday, Saturday into Sunday, and Sunday into Monday.

Guests can enter through the main door, and they will then be buzzed in through security.

The city opens its overnight warming center when temperatures dip below 32 degrees or when a wind chill advisory is issued.

The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Advisory beginning Friday evening through the early morning on Dec. 15, when "bitterly cold conditions" are expected. Wind chills as low as 30 below zero are possible on Saturday night and Sunday.

Snow is also expected between 6 p.m. Thursday and 4 a.m. Friday. Most of the Chicago area will see under 1 inch of snow, with some areas to the south and southwest forecast for up to 2 inches of snow, Patch reported.
