All-Women Softball Tournament Raises Funds For Breast Cancer Research
The 19th Annual Y-Me Softball Tournament at Mt. Greenwood Park directs funds directly to breast cancer research.
Hundreds of women took the softball fields at Mount Greenwood Park on Saturday, Aug. 24, as part of the Ginger Rugai Y-Me Softball Tournament.
For 19 years local teams have battled it out on the field in support of women who are facing a different kind of battle. Money raised from the event goes directly to Dr. Richard Jones at the University of Chicago and his work researching breast cancer.
As part of the day's events, cancer survivors gathered to play a Survivor's Game. Balloons were released and years free from cancer were celebrated before the game's start.
A total of 52 teams competed in three divisions during the tournament which lasted all day. Organizers estimated before the tournament that about $45,000 would be raised.
