CHICAGO — An off-duty Chicago police officer exchanged gunfire early Tuesday morning when he was approached by a group of would-be armed carjackers in Mount Greenwood.

Just after 5:30 a.m. the off-duty Chicgo cop was confronted in the 10800 block of South Campbell Avenue in the 22nd Police District. An exchange of gunfire ensued and the group fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan.

A resident's video showed an alleged suspect running from 108th and South Campbell, according to police.

One person was detained near the scene. The police officer was not injured and no other injuries have been reported.

A home security camera captured a dark-colored vehicle speeding down the street, and gunfire can be heard shortly after, WGN reported. The video also captured an alleged suspect running from 108th Street and Longwood Avenue.

The Chicago Police Department is seeking assistance from residents or businesses in the Beverly/Morgan Park community. “This is yet another reminder that we have to remain vigilant and be aware of our surroundings at all times, and, dial 9-1-1 to report suspicious activity immediately,” Ald. Matt O’Shea said in an email blast with 19th Ward residents. “I will share more information as it becomes available.”

The specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department.

The officer will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.
