Chicago Plows And Warming Centers Prepare For Winter Storm

With a winter storm watch in effect, Chicago's snow route parking rules will go into effect. Also, please knock the snow off fire hydrants.

CHICAGO — The Chicago area is about to get walloped by the first significant snowfall of the year, which means the City of Chicago’s snow parking rules will go into effect along designated snow routes. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch from 9 a.m. Wednesday to 3 a.m. Thursday, with a possible 3 to 6 inches of snow.

The winter storm will likely impact Wednesday’s afternoon and evening commute and the morning commute on Thursday. Motorists are urged to use caution. If you would like to receive emergency weather updates from the city, you can sign up by Notify Chicago.

The Department of Streets and Sanitation will have a fleet of 300 snow vehicles throughout the city to clear streets and distribute salt. Snow vehicles will operate exclusively on main streets for the duration of any storm. When the snow stops, crews will do a final clearing of the main streets before moving inside to residential streets.

On residential streets, plows will work to clear traffic lanes, so cars can safely travel down the street. City plows will not provide curb-to-curb snow removal or clear alleys. Residents are asked not to deposit snow from sidewalks and driveways into the street; this will only create more challenges for plow drivers.
