GENEVA, IL — Five ducklings that fell into a storm drain Monday were rescued by Geneva police and firefighters, officials said.

Geneva first responders were dispatched to the area near Fisher and Larrabee drives after the baby ducks fell in the drain and began running back and forth in the connecting drains under the roadway, according to a Wednesday news release.

Officers Sarah Sullivan and Brad Koontz and firefighters Phil Affrunti, Sam Prang Anabella Happ and Jake Steinmeir were able to open the storm drains to rescue three of the ducklings.

The last two ducklings were stubborn, having swum into a tunnel and refused to exit, officials said. One gave in after a firefighter played a mother duck sound on a phone.

The final duckling continued to decline to come out, prompting firefighters to tape a net about 20 feet down the tunnel, ultimately securing the bird.

The babies were reunited with the mother duck and their siblings who didn't fall into the train after Koontz spotted them at a pond near Fisher Drive and Keslinger Road, officials said. A video on the City of Geneva's Facebook page shows an officer putting the ducklings in the water to join their family.

The duck rescue happened the same day firefighters saved a woman who jumped into the Fox River near the western edge of the downtown Geneva dam, Patch reported.
