GENEVA, IL — Geneva's only Joann, a destination for fabric and crafts, is among several hundred due to close across the country after the company filed for bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year, according to widespread national news media coverage on Wednesday.

The outpost at 714 Commons Drive is one of 500 Joann stores set to close out of the company's roughly 850 locations.

According to one report from Fast Company, "the popular fabric and crafts retailer is moving to close a significant chunk of its brick-and-mortar locations as part of ongoing bankruptcy proceedings, according to a court filing on Wednesday."

The retailer first filed for bankruptcy in March 2024 after securing about $132 million in financing to put toward its $1 billion debt but again filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, according to a report from USA Today.

Joann spokesperson Amanda Hayes confirmed the closings in a statement to Fast Company.

"As part of the ongoing Chapter 11 process and our efforts to maximize the value of the business, JOANN has filed a motion seeking court authority to begin closing approximately 500 stores across the nation," the statement read.

Joann representatives did not respond to Patch's request for comment at the time of publication.

ABC10 reported that 26 stores in Illinois will shutter their doors. Joining the Geneva location are stores in Joliet, Naperville, Vernon Hills and Algonquin, among others.
