Knights In San Diego - Day 2

The view from San Diego by Josh Kortenkamp and Joey Amsler, the Grayslake North Varsity Lacrosse Captains. Learn the result of the team's first game against La Jolla.

Day 2: March 27

After waking up early and shoveling down a delicious continental breakfast at the hotel, it was time for business, as we headed out to practice to get ready for La Jolla. Rancho Bernardo hosted us for practice, and we got to work. Practice went as usual, and our team looked ready for the game.

After practice we had several hours of downtime. Much of the team visited a local outdoor mall, where the consensus favorite store was easily Sun Diego. One dedicated individual went so far as to spend $110 on tank tops alone. After shopping, many returned to the hotel to take advantage of the swimming area.

Some relaxed in the sauna, some swam in the pool, others made themselves comfortable in the outdoor hot-tub, while the rest laid out in the sun to snag some much needed UV rays. After enjoying our downtime it was time for the team to do what it actually came to California for: win lacrosse games.

The first game of our trip wasΒ against La Jolla, where we played at their home stadium. It was complete with a gorgeous view overlooking the Pacific, and a weather rattled score-board destroyed by a tree.

The nightΒ started off as a defensive standstill, with the first goal coming after Β 8 minutes of defensive supremacy highlighted by a yard sale courtesy of defenseman Shane Pech. The defense continued to dominate with long-poles Josh Kortenkamp,Β Ben Smith, Bryce Hermsen, and Kevin Carter controlling the tempo of the game. Junior Goalie Eric York only allowed 3 goals, and to celebrate, flirted with three girls after the game whom came to watch.Β

The offenseΒ flexed their muscle as well, peppering theΒ opposing goalie with shots, with both Matt Schlagetter and AJ Fish racking up 3 goals and 3 assists. Joey Amsler notched two goals, one being a flawless quick stick. Dave Collins, Jack Mattea, and Brendan Walker also added to the party each scoring one. Nick Stanfel, first year varsity starter nicknamed "candy", dominated face offs, giving the knights an edge.

A final score of 11-3 in favor of the Knights was dedicated to our beloved bus-driver: Tommy.

The Knights returned to the hotel to feast on pizza, with the exception of Jack Mattea and Joey Amsler who prefer to eat chicken sticks. The team is looking forward to their game on Tuesday against Granite Hills.
