Grayslake Police Chief Resigns Over DUI Arrest

The Grayslake Police Chief charged with being armed while intoxicated and intoxicated while driving has decided to step down.

Grayslake Police Chief Matt McCutcheon has resigned from his position, according to a release issued on April 12 by Mayor Rhett Taylor.

Taylor stated he has accepted the resignation upon completion of all required legal steps. McCutcheon will remain on administrative leave until it is finalized.

He reportedly had his loaded police-issued gun, although he was off duty at the time. McCutcheon also crashed head-on into another car at the intersection of Highway 45 and County Road C, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff's report. No injuries were reported.

On April 6, McCutcheon was placed on administrative leave.

On April 12, the announcement of McCutcheon's resignation was made public.

Taylor indicated throughout this situation that Grayslake's priority was on maintaining service and continuity for the village.

"Acting Chief McKeever will ensure that day to day police services continue uninterrupted,” Taylor stated.

When asked why an internal member of the was not tapped to be interim chief, Taylor told Patch that, "Appointing a retired police chief to serve as Acting Chief provides our community with an experienced Chief who can begin managing the department immediately. Additionally, it allows the police force to continue to perform their duties with minimal impact."

Taylor said McKeever was one of two retired chiefs who were interviewed for the interim position, after considering several possible candidates.

"We reviewed information regarding several retired chiefs who would be able to serve and chose to interview two based upon recommendations and references," Taylor said.

Now that McCutcheon has resigned, Grayslake officials will immediately begin the process of searching for a new chief of police.

"Chief McCutcheon has served the Village well over his twenty year tenure with the village," Taylor stated today. "We thank him for his service."

McKeever will serve in the interim role until a new Chief of Police is selected. No timeline for the process has been announced.
