Gompers School Raises Money for Charity in Student-Faculty Basketball Game

Gompers Students and Staff Donated Over $2,100 to Guardian Angel Community Services

Congratulations to Gompers Junior High students and staff for raising $2,158 for Guardian Angel Community Services (GACS) during their third annual Students vs. Faculty Basketball Fundraiser. The money was used to purchase household toiletries including shampoo, brushes, and toothpaste and toys for children.

The staff won the basketball game 35-33 when Gompers Physical Education teacher Todd Dow sunk three free throws in the last seconds of the game. Gompers has raised over $5,000 for local charities in the last three years.

“I am incredibly proud of our students and staff for their participation in this annual fundraiser,” said Gompers Junior High School Principal Dr. Raúl Gastón, “It is important to give back to our community.”

Gompers students participating in the game included Kavon Burnett, Jesus Camacho, Abel Carrera, Armani Chambers, Leonardo Choncoa, Mya Diaz, Iziah Green, Mariana Guzman, Aaliyah Hernandez, Caleb Lawler, Mya Lawler, Mason Mitchell, Giovani Moran, Benjamin Moreno, Cayden Nelson, Melanie Ortega, Ashton Pringle, Alondra Rodriguez, Chelsea Salazar, Kayden Simpson, Nicolas Torres Diaz, Derion Wilder, and Willie Wilson. The students were coached by students Adrian Diaz and Kortez Woodson.

The Gompers Junior High Cheer Team enthusiastically cheered on both students and staff during the game. The cheerleaders included Bella Alvarez, Brooklynn Boswell, Mirand Cahua Gonzalez, Samira Calderon, Isabella Campos, Evelyn Carrillo, Jackelyn Garcia, Abril Juarez Mancera, Athziry Jacobo, Andrea Jimenez, Valerie Lopez-Garcia, Ariaknny Moreno Estupinan, Arabella Phillips, Eliana Rodriguez, Abigail Rosas-Ramirez, Edith Ruiz, Salome Sanchez Caicedo, Elianna Sutton, Melissa Villarruel, Karyme Xicara. The Gompers Cheerleaders are coached by substitute teacher Melissa Pappas.

The charity event was coordinated by Gompers Junior High Special Education Paraprofessional Amy Wendell-Blish and a committee of staff members.
