Election 2011: Early Voting Turnout Low

The early voting numbers are in and based on the reports from both DuPage and Will counties it seems a lot of Naperville residents have put off voting until Tuesday. Either that, or voters are less than interested in the consolidated election.

Though the number of people from Naperville participating in early voting was low, in DuPage County, Naperville was the community with the highest turnout, said Doreen Nelson, assistant executive director for the DuPage County Election Commission.

Overall, the total number of Naperville residents who voted early was 1,216, Nelson said. In 2009, the number of residents who voted early at the municipal center alone was 1,060.

Residents registered to vote in Will County who chose to vote early, included 235 residents from Naperville and 59 from Wheatland Township, said Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots.

The turnout often depends on who is running and what offices are up for election, she said.

“The last election with the governor’s race, we had high numbers,” Schultz Voots said, adding that the 2012 presidential election is sure to draw larger numbers of voters.
