OSWEGO TOWNSHIP, IL — An Oswego Township man was sentenced to 75 years in prison for sexualy abusing two children for more than two years, the Kane County State's Attorney's Office said Thursday.

A jury convicted Bruce Bennett Nov. 18 on 12 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Judge David Kliment determined the man's sentencing.

The now-74-year-old Bennett sexually abused two children, both under the age of 13, between November 1999 and March 2001. The abuse occurred at his residence, and Bennett knew both children and "held a position of trust over them," according to Assistant State’s Attorneys Lori Schmidt and Morgan Wilkinson, who prosecuted the case.

In addition to his prison term, Bennett must register for life as a sexual offender. He is required to serve 85 percent of his sentence and receives credit for 769 days served in the Kane County jail.

"After over 20 years, justice is served," Schmidt said in a statement. "I want to commend the victims for their bravery and strength in coming forward and persevering though this trial. Those who prey on and victimize innocent children must be held accountable. Bennet robbed these individuals of their innocence and now he will pay with the rest of his life serving 75 years in prison. This sentence represents justice for the victims and ensures that Bennett will never harm a child ever again."
