PALATINE, IL — The Palatine Police Department said there is no threat to the students and staff at Palatine High School after a 15-year-old male student was arrested Tuesday after a school staff member found a small handgun wrapped inside a sweatshirt. According to police, the school resource officer was helping school administrators with an unrelated matter in one of the classrooms, when the officer was approached by staff members who told the officer they saw a student suspiciously hide something in a sweatshirt and put the clothing item on an adjacent desk.
When the staff member retrieved the sweatshirt and found the gun inside, the student was taken from the classroom and arrested.
According to police, the student made statements to Palatine High School staff members that he had the handgun due to receiving "threats in the community," police said. The student remains at the Palatine Police Headquarters while the investigation continues, into what police said is an isolated incident.
