'Keep The Wreath Red' Program Raises Fire Safety Awareness During Holidays: Palatine FD
The campaign, which runs through New Year's Day, began in Naperville in 1954.

PALATINE, IL — The annual Keep the Wreath holiday safety program is in progress, with the Palatine Fire Department participating once again. Started in Naperville in 1954, the program is intended to raise awareness about fire safety during the holiday season.
From Thanksgiving to New Year's Day, each of the five Palatine fire stations will display a wreath illuminated entirely with red lights. According to the department, in the event of a holiday-related fire, a red bulb will be replaced with a white one.
"We encourage you to reflect on fire safety in your home each time you see these wreaths and take steps to address potential hazards," the Palatine Fire Department said regarding the effort.

Holiday Fire Safety Tips (courtesy of Palatine Fire Department)
• Inspect holiday lights: Check all holiday lighting for worn or damaged wiring and replace as needed.
• Avoid unsafe displays: Do not run lighting or extension cords through windows, doors, or across sidewalks.
• Prevent electrical overloads: If an electrical cord feels hot, it is overloaded — unplug it and redistribute the load.
• Turn off lights when unattended: Always turn off holiday lights before leaving home or going to bed.
• Care for live trees: Use a sturdy tree stand, water your tree frequently, and keep it away from heat sources like fireplaces, space heaters, candles, and heating ducts.
• Inspect smoke alarms: Test smoke alarms regularly and replace batteries as needed. Replace smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old.
• Install carbon monoxide alarms: Place a carbon monoxide alarm near all sleeping areas.
• Use candles safely: Place candles in sturdy holders on firm, uncluttered surfaces, and keep them away from blinds, curtains, and other flammable materials.
• Maintain heating equipment: Have fireplaces and wood-burning stoves cleaned and inspected regularly.
