Authorities ID Pilot Killed When Plane Crashes In Farm Field; Toddler Remains Hospitalized: Police

The 51-year-old Maple Park man killed in the weekend crash has been identified. A 3-year-old boy was taken to Lurie's Children's Hospital.

DEKALB COUNTY, IL — A 51-year-old man killed when a single-engine plane went down in a farm field over the weekend has been identified as James A. Beyer of Maple Park.

A 3-year-old boy who was in the plane when it crashed — and who is related to Beyer — survived, authorities said. He was first treated at Northwestern Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb and then transferred to Lurie's Children's Hospital in Chicago.

A condition update for the child was not immediately available.

Local emergency crews were called to the scene of the plane crash at 12727 U.S. Highway 30 in Hinckley at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the Hinckley Fire Protection District.

When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they were able to extricate the pilot from the plane and perform CPR and life-saving measures. The pilot did not survive and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Injuries sustained by the boy were not considered life-threatening, authorities said over the weekend.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Traffic Safety Bureau are invsetigating the cause of the collision.
