D303 Parents Express Concerns Over Class Sizes

In recent months, parents took part in listening sessions, which will help school officials gauge top concerns that need to be addressed.

ST. CHARLES, IL — St. Charles District 303 recently held listening sessions as school officials work to craft the district's new community engagement plan.

Chief Communications Officer Scott Harvey said 222 people took part in the in-person listening sessions, and district officials will now identify key concerns brought up during the sessions and develop action steps to address the concerns, according to the Shaw Local News Network.

Many parents attending the sessions voiced concerns over elementary school class sizes, stating that more students in classrooms could lead to individual students needs not being met. Other top concerns centered around there not being enough rooms or facilities for the growing student population, overcrowded middle school buildings, the school year being too long and a need for clear steps for addressing students with known or repeated behavior issues, according to Shaw Local.

School officials hired a demographer who is conducting an enrollment study and capacity study, and once D303 officials have the results from that study — which could be in February — there will be further talks on how to address the growing student population, according to Shaw Local.
