Efforts to secure the title of an America in Bloom City through community-building activities that further enhance and beautify West Chicago are in full gear. Mayor Ruben Pineda mentioned the initiative in his 2018 State of the City Address on Monday, April 16th by saying, “Together we can do this!”
America in Bloom committee members working in partnership with the City of West Chicago and the West Chicago Park District, to achieve the national designation are meeting regularly to collaborate on several projects that will not only clinch the title, but will provide a more inviting landscape for residents and visitors throughout the year.
The initiative is designed to include opportunities that invite full participation from the community in a variety of ways, giving everyone involved a sense of pride of ownership in their hometown.
One such opportunity being spearheaded by the West Chicago Lions Club, Rotary Club of West Chicago and Kiwanis of West Chicago, is a Downtown Planting Party scheduled for Saturday, May 12, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Garden beds on Main Street will be prepared by the City’s Public Works crew, and hundreds of flowers supplied by the City will be on-hand for planting. Volunteers need only bring a pair of work gloves and a shovel.
“All three service clubs are really excited to be serving on the America in Bloom committee and to contribute to the effort to beautify downtown West Chicago through our Downtown Planting Party. The tagline for America in Bloom is ‘planting the seeds of community’, and that is exactly what we will be doing on May 12th. We need volunteers for this effort, and encourage involvement in this family-friendly activity,” said Omar Espinosa, member of all three Clubs. “Those wishing to volunteer should register on the Giving DuPage volunteer portal.”
Volunteers are asked to meet at the Fox Community Center, 306 Main Street, at 8:00 a.m.
The City will provide pizza and refreshments at noon for all who participate in the Downtown Planting Party. For more information, contact Omar Espinosa at oespinosa@RepublicEBank.com or (630) 908-1809.
