Kammerer, Kane County's First Elected Board Chairman, Dies At 94
Warren Kammerer was appointed to lead the board in 1990 before being elected in 1992 to continue in the role.
KANE COUNTY, IL — Warren Kammerer, the first person elected to serve as chairman of the Kane County Board, died Monday. He was 94.
Kammerer was appointed to lead the board in 1990 before being elected to continue in the role in 1992. He held the position until 1996.

Kammerer’s family wrote in his obituary that he was a family man who “strove for justice and fairness in all endeavors.” He was “an American success story, a self-made man” having grown up during the Great Depression on a farm in Pecatonica as the oldest of eight siblings, his family wrote.

“He attended a one-room schoolhouse, with lard sandwiches for lunch and cast-off shoes on his feet,” Kammerer’s obituary reads. “He really did walk a mile plus to school in all types of weather.”
Kammerer served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan, according to his obituary. His family said he “fudged’ his second eye exam after failing the first so he could enlist.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1951 from the University of Illinois and became a successful businessman, owning his own Firestone store in St. Charles for more than three decades, according to his obituary.
Kammerer was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kiwanis International, Moose International, the National Exchange Club and the Playmakers community theater group, along with many church committees.

Kammerer is survived by Virginia, his wife of more than 50 years; eight children; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three of his siblings. He will be buried in at a cemetery in Pecatonica, where he was born.
Donations can be made in Kammerer’s name to Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles.
