ELGIN, IL — Elgin Community College will host its first bilingual candidate forum on from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Those stopping out will get to learn more about the candidates for the Kane County Board chairman and the Kane County State's Attorney races.

The forum will be held in building E, room E121, at the college, at the Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. The event, which is co-sponsored by ECC’s Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) and Centro de Informacion of Elgin, is designed to engage the community and encourage students to vote in the November 5 general election, according to a news release from the community college.

Candidates will present their platforms during the student-moderated forum, and Spanish interpretation will be available.

“At a time of intense polarization, it’s important that our community be able to come together to discuss important political issues in a civil way. That’s what CCE does so well,” said Antonio Ramirez, PhD, associate professor of history and Director of the Center for Civic Engagement. “This forum gives candidates the unique opportunity to respond to the concerns of students and the immigrant community in Kane County, voices that are often overlooked.”

Attendees will also be able to register to vote. The YWCA of Elgin, a supporter of the event, will run this.
