St. Charles Aldermen Question City's Role in The Active River Project
The riverfront in downtown St. Charles could become a destination for recreation.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on July 25 voted in favor of supporting a measure committing $73,000 for the Active River Project feasibility study, the Daily Herald reports.
The proposed river park concept aims to transform the riverfront with attractions both on and off the Fox River, from Route 64 to Pottawatomie Park. Features for the project include kayaking, floating gardens, elevated bicycle trails according to the River Corridor Foundation.
The city’s proposed contribution is $73,000 while the St. Charles Park District will kick in $35,000, and the River Corridor Foundation committed $5,000 to share the costs of the $113,000 feasibility study, the Kane County Chronicle reports.

During Monday night's government services committee meeting, aldermen questioned the city’s commitment to the project.
"I don't understand the hesitation," Aldermen Steven Gaugel said in the story. "If we balk at this, we're sending a message that this is something that we're not interested in. Is that the message we want to send?"

"Let's at least just do the study," Alderman Dan Stellato said in the story. "We'll take another look at it after that. I saw some buy-in from a lot of other groups on this project. That's what I was looking for at this point."
