St. Charles Man Pleads Not Guilty to Sex Assault of Wheaton North Student

A St. Charles man who is a teacher in Wheaton and is accused of having sex with a student pleaded not guilty Friday morning in DuPage County Court.

Edwin Klemm, 43, an English teacher at Wheaton North High School, appeared before Judge George Bakalis to enter the plea. Klemm remains in DuPage County Jail on $600,000 bail.

Klemm’s appearance was part of the standard arraignment that takes place before a trial. He faces 11 counts of criminal sexual assault in connection to a relationship he had with a Wheaton North student in 2011. The student was 16 when the 10-month relationship began, Assistant State's Attorney Ann Celine O’Hallaren said.

Prosecutors alluded that Klemm might face additional charges during his initial appearance in court on March 20, but so far no other charges have been filed.

Klemm initially was scheduled to appear in court on April 15, but the hearing was moved up. The reason why was not immediately available Friday.

During a March 19 meeting with investigators, Klemm admitted to having a relationship with the student. He and the student engaged in oral sex and other sexual activity in various places, including Klemm’s St. Charles home, a movie theater parking garage, a parking lot and in a Wheaton North classroom, prosecutors said.

Klemm is suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation, the school district said.

The next court date for this case is a May 15 status hearing, according to court records.
