WARRENVILLE, IL — One staff member was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out late Monday morning at Illinois Youth Center.

Firefighters were called to the facility at 30W200 Ferry Rd. around 11:30 a.m. When they got to the scene, they reported finding "heavy smoke" that was visible coming from the administration building. Residents and employees had been evacuated.

Fire crews battling the blaze were hampered by the day's high heat and humidity. A temporary relief station was set up to allow first responders to take breaks when necessary.

The fire was put out completely by 3:30 p.m. No firefighters were hurt. As of Monday evening, no updates were available on the condition of the staff member who had been treated for smoke inhalation.

Illinois Youth Center was deemed uninhabitable after the fire, the cause of which is under investigation.
