11 Endangered Historic Sites in Illinois for 2016

These historic places have been standing in Illinois for a long time, and now they might be torn down.

Landmarks Illinois has released its list of the most endangered historic places in Illinois in 2016, including notable schools, churches and homes across Illinois that are threatened with demolition.

The organization has been been putting together this list for 21 years and, since then, more than a third of the listed buildings have been saved, less than a quarter demolished and the rest are standing but some are still vulnerable.

“The sites named to the list are all exceptionally important to not only local residents, but the local economy,” said Bonnie McDonald, president of Landmarks Illinois in a press statement. “By calling attention to the potential for reuse and revitalization of these historic places, we are encouraging job creation and economic development across Illinois — something everyone can support — as well as preserving the unique spaces and buildings that create a sense of place in our cities and towns.”
