📰 News we're reading

1. Home septic, restaurant grease, costs EWSU $1 million annually — now dropping service in July (wnin.org) — Evansville’s Water and Sewer Utility will stop accepting residential septic waste and restaurant grease at its wastewater plant after July, ending a service that costs about $1 million a year. Officials say the extension gives private haulers time to open alternative dump sites, warning that improper disposal could harm local water quality and public health.

2. Ribbon cutting held for new Indiana State Police laboratory (14news.com) — A new Indiana State Police forensics lab in Vanderburgh County will serve the Evansville region with twice the space, dedicated crime scene areas, and specialized testing rooms. Leaders say Evansville-area cases should see faster turnaround times and fewer court delays once the lab is fully operational, with the move-in expected to be complete by February 1.

3. Over a dozen organizations receive Opioid Settlement funds in Evansville (14news.com) — Evansville has awarded $1 million in opioid settlement funds to more than a dozen local organizations working on treatment, prevention, and family support. Mayor Stephanie Terry says the money will help expand front-line services at a time when addiction is impacting the entire community. In total, 26 groups requested over $4.7 million in funding.

4. EPD say coach started fight at elementary basketball game (tristatehomepage.com) — Evansville Police say a youth basketball game at Highland Elementary’s gym erupted when an assistant coach allegedly confronted and shoved a referee after a foul call on his child. Officers arrived after the disturbance ended and are still looking for the coach, who reportedly left while making a threatening remark to the official.

5. Harrison Boys Basketball learning to play, after graduating top 3 scorers (14news.com) — Evansville’s Harrison High School boys basketball team is rebuilding after graduating its top three scorers, with several former role players now stepping into bigger offensive roles. Coaches and players are especially encouraged by the early progress of freshmen Romyiez Calvin and Aiden Terry as the Warriors prepare for their next matchup in the Bosse Winter Classic.
