(courierpress.com) — When winter weather hits Evansville, a seven-member EVSC “drive team” hits local roads around 3:30 a.m. to decide on delays or closures for 21,000 students. They fan out across city neighborhoods and Vanderburgh County trouble spots, then recommend a call to the superintendent so parents usually know by 5 a.m.

Evansville's WNIN receives large grant, but it's not enough after cuts (courierpress.com) — Evansville’s PBS station WNIN just landed a $500,000 bridge grant, but leaders say it still leaves a $1 million hole after state and federal funding cuts. The station has already laid off staff and may even sell its riverfront headquarters while leaning on reserves and pledge drives to stay afloat.

3. University of Evansville to Hold 48th Anniversary Commemoration of 1977 Plane Crash (city-countyobserver.com) — The University of Evansville will hold a public memorial service at noon this Friday, Dec. 12, in Memorial Plaza to mark 48 years since the 1977 UE plane crash. Evansville residents are invited to join students, staff, and the men’s basketball team as they hear remarks, a reading of all 29 victims’ names, and observe a moment of silence. The ceremony remembers a tragedy that deeply shaped the Evansville community.

4. Easterseals Evansville Announces Rep. Tim O'Brien as Legislator of the Year (city-countyobserver.com) — Easterseals Evansville has named state Rep. Tim O’Brien, who represents the Evansville area, its Legislator of the Year for protecting Medicaid funding in the latest state budget. Local leaders praise his ongoing advocacy for Hoosiers with intellectual and developmental disabilities and his frequent visits to the Evansville facility. O’Brien says he’ll keep fighting to strengthen services and opportunities for people with disabilities.
