Here are the top three stories today in Bowling Green:

  1. A fatal two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Interstate Drive and Corvette Drive in Bowling Green on May 6, resulting in one death and two injuries. Sandra Cardwell, a 60-year-old Bowling Green resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other occupants of the vehicle, Charles Cardwell and two juveniles, sustained injuries of varying severity. The collision was attributed to distracted driving by a juvenile driver, and the investigation is still underway with the identity of the third passenger undisclosed. (WBKO)
  2. Businessman Kelley Coleman and his partner, Patrick Reynolds, received approval from the City-County Planning Commission of Warren County for two transformative projects that could have a significant impact on Bowling Green. The first project, called "The Launch," aims to build apartments, a hotel, a brewery, and a restaurant, transforming the historic Bohannon tobacco warehouse and enhancing the College Street area. The second project, known as "The Landing," plans to develop an outdoor entertainment and recreation area, including an amphitheater, utilizing the Barren River frontage and connecting it with The Launch through boat rentals. 3. First-grade students at Potter Gray celebrated the Kentucky Derby in a unique way. Each student got to design their own horse from a pool noodle and then race them around a track on the school playground. The race was made up of three different first-grade classes and winners of each race faced off with one another until there was a class champion. The celebration is a good way to teach children about the rich history of the derby while also getting them outside during spring. (wnky.com)

From my notebook:

  • Kentucky's warmer weather will bring more motorcyclists on the roads and Kentucky's Transportation Cabinet's Wes Watt is urging people to be careful and watch out for bikers. In 2022, just under 1,600 motorcycle crashes occurred on Kentucky roadways. Watt also urged motorcyclists to obey the motorcycle laws on Kentucky's roadways and encouraged riders to wear a helmet. • Hope House will have a Bicycle Repair Workshop on May 13. The workshop is free and will teach attendees the basics of how to fix and tune up their bikes for the summer. Bring your bike and learn how to repair it for the season! (City of Bowling Green, Ky - Municipal Government via Facebook)
  • The Bowling Green Police Department will be celebrating 200 years of service on Jun. 2. A ceremony will honor the department at Fountain Square Park, which will also include the Bowling Green Hot Rods at the ballpark. The baseball game details will be announced in an upcoming announcement on the police department's Facebook page. (The Bowling Green Police Department via Facebook)
