Louisville Metro Government has reached a final agreement with First Tee — Louisville who took over operations this week at Bobby Nichols Golf Course, located at 4301 East Pages Lane adjacent to Waverly Park in Southwest Louisville.
First Tee — Louisville will manage the nine-hole course, which has been operated by Louisville Parks and Recreation staff members for the past two years. Bobby Nichols is the second Metro course First Tee — Louisville will oversee. It took over management of Shawnee Golf Course in 2020 after more than a decade of partnership with the city relating to youth golf programming.
“The First Tee’s commitment to bringing the game of golf to the youth of Louisville has been incredible. They have done great work at Shawnee Golf Course and I look forward to seeing the team continue their success at Bobby Nichols,” said Mayor Greg Fischer.
In addition to day-to-day operations of the clubhouse, First Tee — Louisville will continue its mission of introducing youth to the game of golf.
“We are excited about this partnership at Bobby Nichols, and we aim to elevate the playing experience for all golfers and youth in the south Louisville community,” said First Tee — Louisville Executive Director D’Shawn Johnson.
The nine core values First Tee — Louisville seeks to instill in the youth involved in the program are honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment.
“Bobby Nichols has been one of our long-standing program locations and is a beautiful 9-hole layout. We are thrilled to begin this new operation and look forward to this year and beyond at the facility,” said First Tee – Louisville Director of Golf Blake Hardesty, PGA.
With the support of the Metro Council, Louisville Parks and Recreation restructured its contracts with pros at seven golf courses and awarded contracts in early 2020. Those contracts run through early 2024.
“I look forward to working with First Tee of Louisville as they take over the management of Bobby Nichols Golf Course. Not only will they be a great asset for youth programs in Southwest Louisville, but they will restore services at the golf course and club house to regular and new customers,” said Councilwoman Amy Holton Stewart, D-25. “Their commitment to this community is deeply appreciated.”
Louisville’s public golf courses remained open throughout the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the new contract structure and increased play, Metro posted a revenue gain of $1.3 million during the 2021 fiscal year, making the golf division sustainable for the first time in nearly a decade.
“We are grateful to our golf professionals and maintenance staff who are critical to the success,” said Interim Director Margaret Brosko. “They work tirelessly and are committed to ensuring the game is available throughout this community to all who want to play. Golf is on track again this fiscal year which will result in continued improvements and investment at all the city’s courses.”
Players will notice a new roof as well as two new bridges at Bobby Nichols. These are just a few of the overall improvements throughout the system with more to come.
