Louisville – Metro Council is encouraging District 1 residents interested in filling the upcoming Council vacancy to prepare their applications for submission.

Councilwoman Jessica Green (D-1), who is also a practicing attorney, and President David James (D-6) hosted a press conference Monday afternoon to discuss the timeline for filling the councilwoman’s seat. After seven years representing District 1, Councilwoman Green was recently appointed to a vacant circuit court judge positions in Jefferson County by Governor Andy Beshear. Councilwoman Green’s last day on Metro Council will be February 17, 2022.

This is an amazing opportunity now for the residents of District 1 to step up and be a part of leading their community. Please consider how you could make a difference as a Council member, and remember that you do not have to already be running for this spot in order to apply,” said Councilwoman Green.

Once the councilwoman resigns and vacates her seat, Metro Council has 30 days to appoint a new District 1 Council member to serve the remainder of her term. The timeline to fill any vacancy is laid out in Section 10 of the Metro Council Rules, which can be reviewed here.

If Metro Council cannot agree on a replacement, Mayor Greg Fischer would have the opportunity to appoint someone.

Anyone interested in representing District 1 must be at least 18 years old, a qualified voter, and a resident of District 1 for at least one year. Applicants must submit a resume and an application form, which can be found on the Metro Council website or by clicking here.

If an applicant does not qualify for the position, that person will be notified by letter. Qualified applicants will be notified by the Metro Council Clerk’s Office regarding instructions for the interview process.
