Triadelphia Access Road Opens for Winter Use

This winter, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission will extend public access to the trail that borders the reservoir through.

Starting this winter, Montgomery County residents can enjoy year-round access to the Triadelphia Access Road that runs 4.5 miles along the Triadelphia Reservoir.

Keeping the access road open through the winter is part of a one-year pilot program, effective Dec. 1, by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, a water and wastewater utility organization that serves residents in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

Now open daily from sunrise to sunset, the access road is available for horseback riding, bird watching and hiking, provided users obtain a permit from the commission. These permits are available for purchase online.

The trail will be closed all day during excessively wet or muddy conditions, or until 1 p.m. during a scheduled hunt. This winter, hunts are scheduled on Dec. 3, 17, 29 and 30, as well as Jan. 5 and 9.

Prior to next winter, engineers from the commission will conduct erosion studies to evaluate the environmental impact of providing winter access to the trail.
