Free Online Classes For Montgomery County Seniors: Nov. 23-25

GERMANTOWN, MD — Montgomery County seniors can take free online classes to learn how to better navigate life at home during the coronavirus pandemic.

Senior Planet Montgomery, the county's technology training program for residents 60 and older, typically offers lectures, hands-on workshops, and multi-week courses at libraries and senior centers. But during this public health crisis, Senior Planet Montgomery is moving all its programming online.

Many of the online sessions will focus on online user-friendly tools and resources for seniors.

"More Montgomery County seniors are online than ever before," said Montgomery County Chief Information Officer Gail M. Roper. "The Senior Planet Montgomery programs provide a means for them to get more out of their internet availability, and we hope, more out of life overall. We have programs that are geared specifically to support the way seniors learn best — which makes so many things easier to understand."

Classes change on a weekly basis. From Nov. 23 to 25, participants will learn how to initiate a Zoom video conferencing call, send and receive money electronically, and more.

Courses are also offered in Spanish.

Fit Fusion Workout

• When: Monday, Nov. 23, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
• Description: Fit Fusion is a high-energy blend of cardio, strengthening and stretching exercises. Some movements will be done using a chair for support. Music will help you forget you’re exercising! Grab a pair of light weights (dumbbells, water bottles or anything you have around the house!) and join us for this fun workout!

Getting Started on Zoom

• When: Monday, Nov. 23, 1 - 1:50 p.m.
• Description: Ready to start hosting your own Zoom meetings? Come to this hands-on workshop and sign up for a free, basic Zoom account. Additionally, you’ll learn how to schedule a meeting and share the details with the people you want to invite. This workshop will walk through the steps using Zoom in a web browser.

Sending and Receiving Money with Zelle®

• When: Monday, Nov. 23, 3 - 4 p .m.
• Description: With the rise in popularity of person-to-person (P2P) payments, it's now easier than ever to send and receive money electronically. In this lecture, you'll learn what P2P payments are and about Zelle, a P2P payment service that’s available in many online and mobile banking apps. You'll learn the everyday benefits of using Zelle through online and mobile banking and see how it's used through your bank or credit union's website or mobile app. We'll also cover important tips for using Zelle safely. Senior Planet and Zelle have partnered to offer this lecture.

Chair Yoga

• When: Tuesday, Nov. 24, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
• Description: Join us for this chair yoga class featuring poses and breath awareness. Verbal cues offered during class will help you develop better alignment and mind-body connection. Some movements will be done standing.
