Council Work Session with Pepco Cancelled During City Power Outage

First on city council's agenda for the Pepco work session was recent power outages in the city.

Greenbelt City Council was scheduled to meet with Pepco Monday night to discuss the power outages in Greenbelt, but the meeting never happened. A sign on the door to the municipal building stated "Tonight's work session is cancelled due to power loss."

Michael McLaughlin, city manager, said Pepco knew the power was out in the center part of Greenbelt and made the request to reschedule because they wanted all hands on deck for the storms throughout the area.

“I thought it was hilarious,” considering that the meeting was inspired by all the outages in the last couple of years, council member Rodney Roberts said.

There were other Pepco issues on the work session agenda, Roberts reported, but the first item on the agenda was

Roberts said he thought last night was a good example of the problem, explaining it had only rained about 10 minutes before the power went out in the municipal building. He said he was told by Cindy Murray, city clerk, that it also went out in the Lakeside area.

The power went out in the center part of the city at about 5:30 p.m. McLaughlin reported, and it came back on shortly after 7 p.m.

McLaughlin said the work session date has not been rescheduled yet, but may be held at the end of August or in September.
