74-Year-Old Woman Dies, Firefighter Burned In Dundalk House Fire: Officials

A 74-year-old woman died and a firefighter was burned in a Dundalk house fire, crews said. A faulty extension cord caused the blaze.

DUNDALK, MD — A 74-year-old woman died in a Wednesday house fire in Dundalk, crews said, noting that one firefighter suffered minor burns while fanning the flames.

Officials identified the deceased victim as Janet Pereira.

Investigators ruled that the accidental blaze was caused by the failure of an extension cord. The house did not have working smoke detectors, a press release said.

Crews said they were called to the 1800 block of Marshall Road at 11:50 a.m.

First responders said they arrived within three minutes and met flames coming from the front of the house.

Firefighters reported that they found "hoarding conditions" inside the one-story home.

Crews said they learned that the female occupant was unaccounted for and started searching for her.

The victim was found dead minutes later on the first floor of the home, officials said.

Responders said they placed the fire under control by 12:40 p.m.
