Construction to Start on First of Two New Schools

The 102,000-square foot elementary school will be built at Gum Spring Road and Rossville Boulevard, serving 750 students.

Construction will start in April on the first of two new schools in northeastern Baltimore County.

The 102,000-square foot elementary school will be built at the intersection of Gum Spring Road and Rossville Boulevard, serving 750 students from an area to be determined after a redistricting process.

Funding is in place for a new middle school expected to open in 2024, and land is now identified for a new high school. Overcrowding is worse at the elementary school level as magnet programs and private schools have tended to absorb many older students.

Although this school is located in Councilwoman Cathy Bevins’ district, it will serve students from the Fifth District as well. I thank Councilwoman Bevins for partnering with me, as well as my colleague Julie Henn from the Board of Education, County Executive Olszewski, and our state legislators.

In addition to building new schools, I have worked to lighten the impact of development on existing schools that are overcrowded. Thousands of acres have been downzoned, and much of the remaining development will be age-restricted to senior citizens.
