Construction to Start on Project to Relieve Gridlock at MD 43

One of the biggest frustrations I hear is about the gridlock near White Marsh Boulevard--congestion from both local motorists and those driving from Harford County and other places.

This summer, the Maryland State Highway Administration will start a major project to relieve congestion at the intersection of White Marsh Boulevard and Honeygo Boulevard, one of the busiest corners in northeastern Baltimore County.

The project involves widening and reconstructing the intersection by doing the following:

Adding a third left-turn lane from westbound White Marsh Boulevard to southbound Honeygo Boulevard;

Adding a third left-turn lane from southbound Honeygo Boulevard to eastbound White Marsh Boulevard;

Adding an additional thru lane along eastbound White Marsh Boulevard;

Increasing the left-turn lane capacity from northbound Honeygo Boulevard to westbound White Marsh Boulevard; and

Adding a pedestrian crossing along the eastbound White Marsh Boulevard leg of the intersection.

The project also includes grinding and resurfacing the roadway, reconstructing right-turn channeling islands, and improving sidewalks, drainage structures, pavement markings, signing, intersection signals and landscaping.

The project is expected to be completed by fall 2022. No detours are planned. Work will occur during non-peak hours - from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. - to minimize disruptions. Work during the holidays will be limited.

Motorists continually tell me that congestion at this intersection is one of the most frustrating challenges they experience. This project will help improve mobility in the long term. The State Highway Administration has directed contractors to work during non-peak hours, but please be patient as construction occurs.
