Labor Day 2024: What's Open, Closed In Montgomery County
Here are the openings and closings to know for the Labor Day 2024 holiday across Montgomery County. Plus, two cities have parades planned.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Labor Day weekend marks the last gasp of summer ahead of school starting.
Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 2, when Montgomery County and various city government offices will be closed along with other services. Many students who have already started school will have a three-day holiday weekend.
The annual Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade returns to the streets of Olde Towne on Monday, Sept. 2 at a new time: 10 a.m. Now in its 86th year, this rain or shine event includes high school marching bands, dance groups, costumed characters, antique cars and fire engines, equestrian units, clowns, and more, all traveling down East Diamond and Russell Avenues.

Kensington's annual Labor Day Parade & Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The parade starts at 10 and runs from Plyers Mill Road to Noyes Library. The festival includes food, beer and wine vendors; live music; bounce houses and more and goes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Armory Avenue. The event will be held rain or shine.
The Maryland State Highway Administration expects traffic volumes to increase around the state from Thursday through Labor Day. The department will suspend non-emergency roadwork from 3 p.m. on Thursday through 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

Driver are encouraged to travel off-peak if possible, particularly when heading to and from the Eastern Shore. According to state highway officials, the best times to travel the Bay Bridge over the Labor Day weekend are:
- Thursday, Aug. 29, before 2 p.m. and after 8 p.m.
- Friday, Aug. 30, before 11 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
- Saturday, Aug. 31, before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
- Sunday, Sept. 1, before 11 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
- Labor Day Monday, Sept. 2, before 10 a.m. and after 9 p.m.
- Tuesday, Sept. 3, before 7 a.m. and after 10 a.m.
As of Monday, Aug. 28, the national gasoline price average was $3.81 per gallon. Maryland’s average was $3.73, 6 cents lower than a year ago, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

County, city offices, and the MC311 service center: Closed Monday, Sept. 2.
Montgomery County office buildings: Closed Monday, Sept. 2.
State offices and courts: Closed Monday, Sept. 2.
Montgomery County Schools: Closed Monday, Sept. 2.
Post offices: Closed Monday, Sept. 2
State Motor Vehicle Administration offices and Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program stations: Closed Monday, Sept. 2.
Libraries: Closed on Sunday, Sept. 1, and Monday, Sept. 2.
Alcohol Beverage Services: All stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2.
Department of Permitting Services: All offices, including customer service lobby, are closed Monday, Sept. 2.
Ride On: Will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, Sept. 2. View route schedules here.
Ride On extRa and Flex: Will not operate on Monday, Sept. 2.
Ride On Flash: The Orange Route will operate on a Weekends and Holidays schedule. The Blue Route (typically, weekday only) will not be in service on Monday, Sept. 2.

TRiPS Silver Spring Commuter Store: Closed Monday, Sept. 2.
TRiPS Mobile Commuter Store: Closed Monday, Sept. 2.
Metrorail and Metrobus: Metrorail trains will operate on a Sunday Holiday schedule from 7 a.m. to midnight. Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule. View timetables at wmata.com/schedules/timetables.
Parking at Bethesda, Silver Spring and Wheaton public garages, lots and curbside meters: Will be free.
County-provided trash and recycling: There will be no trash and recycling collections on Monday, Sept. 2. Collections will slide one day throughout the rest of the week, with the last pickup on Saturday, Sept.7.
Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center: Closed Monday, Sept. 2.
Aquatic Centers: County outdoor aquatic facilities will be open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2. Recreation, senior and indoor aquatic centers are closed.
