MoCo Student Charged In School Shooting Threat

A 13-year-old boy is facing charges in connection with a shooting threat, which prompted two schools to shelter in place Monday.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — A 13-year-old boy is facing charges after police said he made threats against a Montgomery County school.

According to police, administrators at Parkland Middle School received phone calls on Monday from an individual claiming they intended to carry out a school shooting. School officials immediately notified Montgomery County police, prompting officers to respond to the campus.

As a precaution, both Parkland Middle School and nearby Brookhaven Elementary School issued shelters-in-place.

Investigators later identified the caller as a student from a different middle school. The teen has been charged with threats of mass violence and disruption of school activities.

Because the boy is a minor, the case will be handled by the Department of Juvenile Services.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community.
