County Cops Credited With Saving Man's Life, Arresting Suspect

SILVER SPRING, MD — Two Montgomery County police officers are being credited with saving a stabbing victim's life in Silver Spring late last month.

Around 4:35 a.m. on June 28, Officers Justin Lee and Addison White responded to a report of a stabbing in the 2800 block of Mozart Drive. Upon arrival, they found a 28-year-old man lying on the pavement in a townhome parking lot, bleeding and unresponsive.

Amid the screams of terrified witnesses, the pair began administering life-saving measures, according to police-worn body camera footage.

Lee realized that the man had been stabbed in the arm and applied a tourniquet in an attempt to stop the bleeding, police said. White jumped in and helped Lee apply a dressing to a stab wound on the victim's chest.

Witnesses told the officers that Marvel Alston — a 34-year-old Washington, D.C. resident — stabbed the man, and was inside one of the homes. Police said an officer got on the phone with Alston and persuaded him to return to the scene.

Upon further investigation, officers determined that the stabbing was the result of a dispute. Alston was charged with first-degree assault and carrying a dangerous weapon openly with the intent to injure an individual in an unlawful manner, court records show.

The stabbing victim was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. He has since been discharged, police said.

"We are proud of these highly trained officers who, without regard for their own safety during this ongoing pandemic, provided immediate care that saved a life. The officers also placed a dangerous criminal under arrest," Capt. Darren Francke, commander of the 3rd Police District, said.
