SILVER SPRING, MD — A former track and field coach at Northwood High School was sentenced to one year in jail and three years of supervised probation on Wednesday for the sexual abuse of a student, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
As part of a plea agreement, the former coach, Giovanni Reumante, 34, of Takoma Park waived two years of credit for time served. He also will be registered a sex offender for life, the state’s attorney’s office said.
Reumante pleaded guilty to sex abuse of a minor in November 2022. He had worked as a track and field coach at Northwood High School in Silver Spring since 2013. He also worked as a paraeducator at the high school and as part of the MCPS security team.

Reumante was arrested on Dec. 29, 2021, shortly after a flight from the Dominican Republic arrived at Dulles International Airport. Earlier that day, the Montgomery County Police Department had issued a warrant with a nationwide extradition request for Reumante.
According to charging documents, Reumante and the female student at the high school met during the 2014-2015 school year, when he was an assistant coach for the school’s track team and the student was a 15-year-old sophomore. The girl texted Reumante, asking him a question about track. The message led to a text conversation where he told the girl she was “very beautiful” and said he "was going to marry her," according to charging documents.
During the student's junior year, Reumante and the student began a romantic relationship and had their first kiss on school grounds, according to charging documents. The relationship continued into her senior year when they began to have sexual intercourse right after she turned 17, the charging documents say.
