SILVER SPRING, MD — The former treasurer of the Montgomery County Council of PTAs, Lisa Betts, was charged Wednesday for embezzling nearly $40,000 from the organization, according to court documents.
The 47-year-old Silver Spring resident agreed to pay full restitution, less $10,000 she has already paid, Montgomery Community Media reports. The prosecutor suggested she receive six months' probation.
On April 25, 2017, the organization posted a notice on its website about the "significant financial irregularities" that occurred. The organization conducted a three-week internal audit and found $39,000 was taken from the council's checking account between July 2016 and March 2017.
