The Tree Lighting Celebration & Street Party will take place from 6-9 p.m. at Fountain Plaza. The year's tree, the 35-foot-tall “Good Energy Tree,” focuses on the power and possibilities of the bicycle and began installation Nov. 6.
Visitors can light the tree by peddling the bicycles at the tree’s base, provided by Capital Bikeshare. The bikes are connected to a 300watt generator which can provide power to a USB port and also allow visitors to charge their cellphones, according to a news release.

Residents can also enjoy a hip-hop performance by Christylez Bacon, an a-cappella performance by UMD's PandemonIUM, beer and seasonal sangria, food tasting, games and more.
The project is in partnership with A Wider Circle, a local non-profit that helps families in need in the region. At the end of the season, the bicycles on the tree will go to families being helped by A Wider Circle.
