'The Nutcracker' Musical Coming to Chevy Chase

The Round House Theatre will host a special performance of its holiday musical, The Nutcracker, on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m.

Perfect for families with young children, the matinee performance features puppetry, captivating dialogue and an original musical score, and concludes with a private reception with members of the theater’s production team. Seats in this performance are limited, so guests should RSVP on Monday, Dec. 1.

A novella by E.T.A. Hoffmann, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King tells the tale of young Marie Stahlbaum, whose new Christmas gift, a wooden nutcracker, comes alive and transports her to a magical doll kingdom ruled by the corrupt King Mouse. In Tchaikovsky’s beloved adaptation of The Nutcracker into a ballet, the protagonist is renamed Clara Stahlbaum.

This musical takes another pass at the story. After the loss of her Marine brother, young Clara embarks on a crusade to save her grieving family with the help of a remarkable nutcracker, who shows her the healing power of the imagination.

The Round House Theatre will host a number of performances of the holiday musical, including showings on Monday, Dec. 22, at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 7:30 p.m., and on Friday, Dec. 26, at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the musical are $30 for adults, and $20 for seniors over 65 and for those 30 and under. For Sunday’s afternoon performance, the theater will distribute tickets starting at 2:40 p.m. in the patron’s lounge.

Located a block from Wisconsin Avenue in Chevy Chase at 4545 East-West Highway, the Round House Theatre hosts events throughout the year. Audience members can look forward to the area premieres of Rapture, Blister, Burn in January and Uncle Vanya in April, as well as the American premiere of NSFW, a comedy about privacy and the struggle for power in the media.
