ARLINGTON, MA — The fire department has acquired a new, advanced resuscitation device with the assistance of the town’s Department of Health and Human Services.

The two entities used $17,815 to purchase a LUCAS Chest Compression System. The device provides high-quality chest compressions and effective ventilation for people suffering opioid-associated cardiac arrest. The device is supposed to be more reliable than manual CPR, which is critically important during opioid overdoses.

“This is a public health-driven decision,” Director of Health and Human Services Colleen Leger said. “The LUCAS system supports our first responders in providing timely, effective care for opioid overdoses, an area where minutes can mean the difference between life and death.”
