Arlington Police Cracking Down On School Bus Safety
The department's Traffic Unit is looking to discourage drivers from not stopping for school buses.
ARLINGTON, MA — The police department’s Traffic Unit has launched a new enforcement initiative that aims to identify and address drivers who fail to stop for school buses.
According to state law, all vehicles must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, including emergency vehicles. The new protocols include having officers specify if motor vehicle incidents involve vehicles that carry 16 or more passengers. Those incidents will then be investigated by the Registry of Motor Vehicles. In addition, officers will work with public schools in the district to obtain video footage from buses equipped with audio and video cameras.
“Ensuring school bus safety is imperative,” Lieutenant John Kelley, Officer in Charge of the Arlington Police Traffic Unit said. “Drivers must stop for buses when children are getting on or off. Our officers will remain vigilant in addressing violations to guarantee the safety of Arlington's students.”
