ARLINGTON, MA — The police department is warning residents against another telephone scam in which the perpetrators are calling residents pretending to be from Arlington police.

The difference in this most recent instance compared to previous reports is that the callers are providing names of real officers along with false badge numbers. The callers claim to be investigating a package that contains illegal drugs, with fentanyl being a commonly used example. They then attempt to acquire residents’ banking information.

Police emphasized that the calls are fraudulent, and that no branch of its department would call community members to ask for personal information or payment, and that if the call seems suspicious residents should hang up immediately.
