Construction On Chestnut Street, Site Of Fatal Crash, Begins Mid-April
The Chestnut Street Safety Project was launched in 2021 after the 2019 death of an 81-year old pedestrian who was struck on Chestnut Street.
ARLINGTON, MA – Construction on Chestnut Street in Arlington is set to begin mid-April, the Department of Public Works has announced.
Safety improvement work will begin on April 10 on Chestnut Street in Arlington Center.
The improvements are part of the Chestnut Street Safety Project, which was launched in 2021 after an 81-year old woman was struck while crossing the intersection of Chestnut Street and Chestnut Terrace. She later died as a result of the collision.

In addition to the construction project, the Department of Public Works will be making accessibility improvements to a number of curb ramps in the vicinity.

Arlington received approximately $144,000 in funding from the MassDOT Shares Streets and Spaces grant for the project in 2022.
Stantec Consulting Services, Inc., was hired to provide design, engineering, and community engagement services for the project, in combination with the firm’s work on the Mass Ave/Appleton Safety & Accessibility Corridor Project.
Stantec advanced conceptual drawings into construction plans for Chestnut Street between Chestnut Terrace and Medford Street to implement changes approved by the Select Board.
The town issued a request for proposals (RFP) for both the Chestnut Street and Mass Ave/Appleton Safety Projects in December 2021 and received proposals from four different companies. Town staff determined Stantec’s proposals to be the most advantageous to the town.
