Grammy-Nominated Musician John Forté Found Dead In Chilmark Home: Reports

The recording artist and producer was 50 years old.

CHILMARK, MA — Recording artist and producer John Forté was found dead at his Chilmark home Monday, according to reports.

"John Forté, the Grammy-nominated musician known for his work with the Fugees and the Refugee Camp All-Stars among others, has died at age 50," per CNN.

A neighbor found Forté alone on the kitchen floor and called the police at 2:30 p.m. but by the time they arrived he was unresponsive and not breathing, and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to People.

"It is such a small community, this death hits close to home. It’s the upside and the downside to living on such a small Island," Chilmark Police Chief Sean Slavin said in the People story, which noted no foul play was suspected.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Forte was introduced to The Fugees by Lauryn Hill and then went on to co-write and produce “Cowboys” and “Family Business” on "The Score," the Toronto Sun reported.

"The album, which earned Forte a Grammy nod, topped the Billboard charts upon its 1996 release, hit multi-platinum status and won two Grammys," the Sun story said.

"Forte would go on to release five more solo albums featuring contributions from musicians including Fat Joe, DMX, Herbie Hancock, and Carly Simon, who just happened to be the mother of his close friend, musician Ben Taylor," according to the Sun.

Forté is survived by his wife, Lara Fuller, and two children, Deadline reported.
