Brockton Boy, 11, Dies While Playing At Basketball Club: Reports

The boy, identified as 11-year-old George-Levi Njuguna from North Middle School, was playing at the Dana Barros Center​ when he collapsed.

BROCKTON, MA — A Brockton sixth grader is dead after collapsing while playing at a basketball club in Stoughton Tuesday night, according to multiple reports.

The boy, identified as 11-year-old George-Levi Njuguna from North Middle School, was playing at the Dana Barros Center around 8 p.m. when he became unresponsive, police told multiple outlets including Boston.com.

Dispatchers gave CPR instructions over the phone as officers rushed to the scene. Once they arrived, paramedics took over CPR, but Njuguna later died at the hospital.

"From what I understand, he had no real cardiac issues historically," Stoughton Fire Chief Michael Carroll told Boston25. "A normal healthy child."

In a statement shared with Boston25, the Barros Basketball Club — which opened in 2018 and was started by 15-year NBA veteran and former Boston College standout Dana Barros — offered 'heartfelt condolences to the player’s family as they deal with the unimaginable loss.'

The club continued: "Our entire basketball community, especially his teammates and coaches but all of our club members and their families are devastated and heartbroken over this tragedy. This young man loved basketball, he was a cherished teammate and friend, and it is difficult to imagine the Club moving forward without the presence of his smiling face."
