Brockton Firefighter Matt Parziale Top Amateur At U.S. Open

Matt Parziale outperformed some of the most well-known golfers around, including Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia.

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Matt Parziale's unexpected run at the PGA's major golf tournaments continued with a medal-winning performance Sunday.

The full-time Brockton firefighter finished tied for 48th at the U.S. Open this weekend with a score of +16. The score on the notoriously difficult course earned him a medal for the lowest amateur score at the tournament. He shared the honor with Luis Gagne at the best of the 20 amateurs in the field.

Parziale's weekend was much better than some well-known pros who competed. Unlike Parziale, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Sergio Garcia, and Keegan Bradley all missed the cut.
