Former Brockton Fire Chief Dies At Age 90

Retired Brockton Fire Chief James M. Hallisey died on Saturday following a brief illness.

BROCKTON, MA—Retired Brockton Fire Chief James "Jim" M. Hallisey, 90, of Middleboro, died on Saturday, Dec. 12 following a brief illness, according to his obituary.

Hallisey was born and raised in Brockton and lived there for many years before moving to Middleboro. He graduated from Brockton High School in 1948, received his associate degree in Fire Science at Massasoit Community College, and served in the Navy as a dirigible radio man during the Korean War.

A member of the Brockton Fire Department for 35 years, Hallisey retired from his position as chief in 1992. During that time, he was a member of the Fire Chiefs Association, president of Brockton Firefighters Union, Local 144, and taught fire science at Massasoit Community College. He leaves behind four children, 11 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

"In his free time, Jim loved to travel, read non-fiction books, play pool, bocce, cards and calling Bingo," says his obituary. "He especially enjoyed time with his family and hosting the annual Christmas Eve party. He will be remembered as a gentleman and great father."

Visitation will take place at the Conley Funeral Home in Brockton on Friday, Dec. 18 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service and burial at Melrose Cemetery. To prevent further spread of COVID-19, social distancing and mask-wearing will be required and there is a maximum of 40 people in the funeral home at one time. Hallisey's family asks those who wish to honor him to consider making donation to a charity in his name.
